Return to News Exchange Republican Whip's Dereg Bill Would Strip Local Communities of Powers

Republican Whip Tom DeLay has introduced a deregulation bill in the Congress which would bar local and state governments from regulating "the pricing, terms, or conditions of service offerings by electric service providers," would restrict their ability to regulate who may legally sell electricity, and would also repeal the anti-monopolistic Public Utilities Holding Company Act of 1935. DeLay told Public Power Weekly that his Consumers Electric Power Act of 1996 "clearly shows the direction that I believe deregulation...should take."
