The mystical boundary of rationality is the most narcissistic self which has no particular requirement for sensory verification at its rudiment. The religious self is subject to sensory verification through the production of intra and inter personal comfort. The rational self is verified by the test of the dynamic awareness of geometric coordination.
Rational thought shares a common boundary with all thought in the form of the non sequitur, which is classically seen as the reversal or the antinomy. Within this paradigm of rationality, mysticism and religion are not psychoses because they function to produce comfort rather than illness. Religion in particular goes toward the semantic verification of the dream and the production of a mass coordinating infrastructure pragmatically identified as the cultural implicit assumption. It disciplines narcissism by multiple system rationalization; and, in the case of Christianity, the insistence upon a Single System Reality encompassing all events. The ultimate boundary of rational thought is the pure self object. This self object represents the coincidence of the implicit and the explicit assumptions and the production of a single system organization of the solipsism. The single system organization of the solipsism is the closest approximation of the organism to the knowable aspect of God.
Normal behavior in the form of religious organization is autonomously verified by the massive acting out of the mating ritual. In this sense, massive violence identified with the institution of war is normal behavior. The generation of the self object by the emphasis upon individual responsibility is the modality of peace that most nearly approximates the perfect evolutionary progression and the atomism of democracy. The democratic ideal is government by reasoned persuasion and conscience.
Organizational divisions of behavior also lie on the continua roughly conforming to those of psychology and communication. Massive organization depends upon the generation of like implicit assumptions and the rational ordering of the experienced first principles to form the common explicit assumption. The ministration to the implicit assumptions is the work of the priest. The formalized structure reflecting the work of the priest is religion. The psychologist tends the same garden as the priest in the interest of more worldly concerns. Synergizing the common implicit assumptions, that is in effect the rationalization of trauma so as to give temporally integrated behavior a comfort valence, is the province of the state.
The methodology of the state goes toward the inter objective as opposed to the inter subjective ministration of the church. It is a methodology that most commonly induces geometrically oriented trauma, which is assuaged by religion. The basic form of the public administration of the implicit assumption is the organization of the military. Its sophisticated form is formalized education.
In the American experience the father of public administration is President Woodrow Wilson. However, the self conscious origin of modern public administration harks back to the reign of Henry VIII; and its formal implementation can be traced to the Puritanical rule of Oliver Cromwell. Cromwell initiated the registration of births, marriages, and deaths. This signaled a movement from canon to civil law in the administration of the implicit assumption.
Henry VIII's instruction in public administration is attributable to Anne Boleyn. She required of Henry the restructuring of the Church, so that he in fact became the defender of the faith, and, the reordering of the Crown favoring her issue, as a condition of her loving sexual capitulation.
Henry completed his course of instruction in approximately three years with the beheading of Anne. Anne clearly exposed the nature of the mating ritual as the supreme form of the criterion of action. The implicit assumption as the pragmatic criterion of action also reduces to the experienced first principles and what Wagner would call love.
Henry learned, as did Alberich, the evil-looking misshapen dwarf of the Ring operas, that it was necessary to give up love as a condition of being lord of all the world. Wagnerian love is the equivalent of deterministically defined romance. Romance generates the prince and the princess, the hero and the heroine. Neither the princely nor the heroic posture is capable of rule.
In reference to the primary-secondary process continuum, public administration operates toward the primary process pole, but encompasses the entire continuum. Its purpose is the articulation of endogenous and exogenous competition. War makes this objective particularly clear as the end of war is to change the criterion of action of the enemy to produce a transcendent consensus. In victory the defeated one identifies with the implicit assumption of the victor. This is rational thought in action.
The business administrator gravitates toward the primary process pole of the primary-secondary process reversal. He caters to the implicit assumption. His field of activity is the management of games and supplying of artifacts to enhance organizational functioning.
In effect the business administrator is an applied economist. His god is economic man whose powers are a pale reflection of omniscience and omnipotence. This god functions in the light of free information and the force of human potency. He is a political creature whose product is the equilibration of supply and demand. The arena is endogenous competition and the intellectual component of his functioning tends toward matrix thought.
The evolutionary product of the fusion of the explicit and the implicit assumption is the changing of the physiology. The implicit assumption is of a valential and directional character. It is the unconscious search for comfort modified by the content of the subconscious representing personal memory. Inevitably, it is the urge toward conjugation flowering through the organizational continuum and focused by the primal scene. This is the channel of evolutionary pleasure best modeled by the good baby.
This beautiful urge is demonstrated by gambling behavior where the gambler searches for the hand of lady luck. In a poker game each participant strives for the pot by savoring his memories of success. This is the implicit assumption. His explicit assumption is circumscribed by the deal. He judges his moves by his feelings and his pragmatic appreciation of the other players. When he wins there is a merging of the implicit and explicit assumptions, which is the orgasmic equivalent. It is the process of objectification, rationalization, and neutralization. When the pot is lost, comfort disorientation is experienced and the mating ritual reasserts itself with more primitive vigor. This is the process of addiction that very closely approximates the romantic encounter.
The force of the romantic encounter is the regressive tendency toward neutralization with the minimum of objectification. It is the conjugal urge that is second only to that of hunger satisfaction.
The addictive character of hunger satisfaction is exploited in the gambling behavior experiments with rats. Rats are trained to work a lever that delivers alfalfa pellets. One group is trained so that they receive a pellet every time they the lever is pushed. A contrasting group is fed only randomly. In the randomly fed group the frustration aggression response is emphasized, which results in addiction. The proof of the addiction is shown by using an empty alfalfa hopper. The group that has been fed every time it worked the lever will push it two or three times and give up. The randomly fed rats will push the lever repeatedly over a long period of time. The significant aspect of this experiment as an addictive process is that there is the imputation that there is a frustration of an expectation of pleasure. The expectation of pleasure is what is also identifiable as the implicit assumption. It is a merging process.
Religious organization requires an immanent focus, as it is based on the intrinsic inability of the organism to differentiate itself from others. Its depressive core is the mother.
It follows that the dominant effort in religion is the reestablishment of the dual unity. In ancient religious history it was thought that the eradication of all difference, most specifically sexual difference, was the avenue to a union with God. The eradication of sexual difference in coitus not only represents death, but it introduces sexual addiction and the psychosis by reason of its fusional immanent focus. For these and other attendant reasons the early religious effort had to be modified.
Most typically, the trend became the avoidance of sexual contact. Coitus reservatus is, perhaps, the most extreme form of this dissociated worship of God. In coitus reservatus, the meditator-worshipper is thought to retain his semen; and the semen, like a snake, is supposed to went its way up the spinal column to make contact with the brain, representing a perfect union with the Supreme Being. This perfect sexual union with God presages the Cartesian God, the Thinker.
